Raízes (roots in Portuguese) symbolises the profound influence of the (West) African diaspora on Brazilian carnaval, highlighting the complex relationship between pride in Brazil’s cultural richness and the ongoing racism that persist. While carnaval is a celebration with cultural and religious fusion, it also carries a history marked by the legacies of slavery and colonisation. The artwork uses the Xequerê, a traditional African instrument which is used, among others, during carnaval, to represent the African contributions that shape carnaval.
